The Bookwoman Review

Three in Love: Menages a Trois from Ancient to Modern Times
Long-time member of WNBA, (New York) Barbara Foster co-authored Three In Love with the other two members of her own "family of choice" or menage a trois. The book, a six-year project, is a serious, detailed study of three-way relationships, some explicity sexual and others more ambiguous and complex. The work came about from the intimate "partnership" and creative symbiosis of a married couple, the Fosters, and their mutual companion of 16 years. The writers argue that domestic threesomes are healthy and certainly nothing new. They make a case for the prevalence of such trios throughout history, begining with the Bible (Jacob, Leah, and Rachel) and prosessing to royalty, political figures, actors, painters, and outlaws (Butch CassidY, the Sundance Kid, and Etta Place). some of the "artisque" menagers mentioned include Neal and Carolvn Cassady and Jack Kerouac; Henry and June Miller and Anais Nin; and Dora CarrinFon, Ralph Partridge, and Lytton Strachcy.

Foster, a published poet, is an associate professor and librarian. Her husband Michael, is a published novelist who co-authored a biography with her, Forbidden journey:The Life of Alexanda David-Neel (HarperBooks, 1989). Hadady, a respected herbalist, is the author of Asian Health Secrets (Crown.l996).
